The elementary school is situated as an emerging horizon line within a vast and open landscape, modulated by the play of various volumes and their respective rooflines. While perspectives of the landscape vary through the space — be it the densely planted pine forest, a vast field, or Mount Shefford — the views are constant. As a result of its large windows, generous roof overhangs, and multiple entry points, the architecture of the building blurs the line between outside and inside, allowing it to fully integrate into its surroundings. The cluster of distinct volumes, each targeted to different age groups, is arranged in sequence to evoke academic progress and suggest a double reading of the ensemble: individual expression and a shared sense of belonging. Everyone can spatially visualize their own and others’ past and future journey through the school cycle. Together, the pavilions define a common central courtyard that is closed enough to evoke intimacy while remaining open enough to embrace the sprawling landscape. The school combines simplicity with spatial variety to provide a welcoming environment for students, with references to archetypical local agrarian buildings for a sense of familiarity: a new innovative school model in constant contact with landscape where everyone feels welcome.
