Montreal, Quebec
Residential
Built
The project consists of the complete renovation and expansion of a small Montreal duplex. The rear addition is spread over four floors: a new basement, two full floors, and a partial floor on the roof. Two existing units are retained, the first occupying the first floor and basement, and the second occupying the second floor and mezzanine levels. The general "L" morphology allows light to penetrate central areas and allows the living spaces at the rear to benefit from direct light from the south. Instead of the metal fire escape typical of Montreal backyards, the upper unit has a private rear entrance and interior staircase. This creates ambiguity as to the nature of the front and rear facades. The simplicity of the white brick treatment and the anodized aluminum details contrast with the abundance of forms, colors, and textures in the context. This completes an immediately recognizable element in the variegated landscape of Montreal's back streets.
