Cultural
International Competition, 1st Prize, Ongoing
At the center of the design for the new PHI Contemporary is an understanding of the institution as an active entity that is being formed in real-time — open and in a state of permanent transformation. While it is very much anchored in Old Montreal and its fragmented historical context, PHI Contemporary is also a fundamentally forward-looking, relational, and multi-layered project; blurring the lines between inside and outside, new and old, as well as between private philanthropy and public mission. Conceived as a contemporary stage — an open multilayered landscape rather than a building — the project unites a plurality of spatial configurations through an open platform. This territory enables artists and curators, as well as visitors, to use the spaces in a flexible and inventive way. This way, they can embody the organization’s novel contemporary approach to art production.
